4 Cozy After Dark Games to Wishlist Before You Remember You’re Easily Scared

The Cozy After Dark showcase highlights indie games that mix cozy atmosphere with creepy mysteries, dark fantasy, and unsettling surprises. Basically, games that make you say “Oh, that’s cute” before noticing something you’d rather hadn’t moved.

It understands a very specific type of player: someone who sees a beautifully illustrated forest, notices something disturbing between the trees, and immediately wants to know the release date. We have concerns, but apparently none that would prevent a purchase.

If you’re looking for upcoming spooky games on Steam, these four caught my attention for their unusual premises, distinctive artwork, and ability to make an ordinary situation considerably worse. Running a detective agency sounds manageable. Discovering the kitchen appliances need an exorcism feels like something you should charge extra for.

1. Private Psychic

Private Psychic follows Maple, a psychic starting her own paranormal detective agency. Unfortunately, her fear of the future interferes with her ability to predict it. An awkward development when that is quite prominently advertised in your job title.

The game combines investigation with dialogue, asking you to photograph clues, question characters, and identify paranormal entities. Maple also has help from POLTR, a poltergeist living inside her phone.

Honestly, if something is going to live in my phone, I’m glad it has responsibilities. Everything else in there just wants me to buy something.

Why it belongs on your wishlist: The combination of supernatural cases and a protagonist trying to get her adult life together gives it a strong hook. I’m particularly interested in how its investigations and choices develop, rather than simply whether the ghosts look cute.

Release status: Steam currently lists the release date as to be announced.

2. Gretel & Hansel

Gretel & Hansel is a hand-painted watercolor horror adventure where you guide Gretel and her brother through a cursed forest. Expect puzzles, deadly traps, strange creatures, and a witch whose interest in children should not be encouraged.

The artwork is a major attraction. The game builds its world from physical watercolor paintings, giving it the appearance of a storybook you probably shouldn’t have been allowed to read unsupervised.

It also reimagines the original Newgrounds games and adds the long-awaited third part. For returning players, that means more than a familiar name getting a fresh coat of paint.

Why it belongs on your wishlist: It’s a compelling choice for players who enjoy exploration, sinister fairy tales, and dark humor. However, the illustrated style comes with stylized blood, gore, and numerous possible deaths. Please don’t recommend this to someone solely because they like watercolor.

Release status: The full game is listed as coming soon, with a Steam demo available.

3. HINO

HINO is a dark fantasy action-adventure from UnGloomStudio, published by Toei Games. Its world draws on illustrator Yatara’s ballpoint-pen artwork.

The story follows Hino, who awakens in a ruined kindergarten and travels through a monster-filled world with a companion called Moni-Moni Skeleton. A Lightbulb Cane is central to her introduction, while the journey involves searching for safety and uncovering the truth about the characters.

The skeleton wants canned café au lait. Fair enough. If I’m expected to walk through a world full of monsters, we are stopping for a drink first.

Why it belongs on your wishlist: Its distinctive visual identity and central partnership make it worth watching. This is an action-adventure, though, so I’d approach it as a dark journey to investigate—not assume it’s a gentle game because the characters are appealing.

Release status: Coming in 2027 according to Steam.

4. Adopt Me Please

Adopt Me Please puts you to work at Softlight Shelter, checking stray animals and finding them homes. Lovely. A job involving animals. Surely we can relax here.

Unfortunately, some of the animals are mimics hiding behind convincing pet disguises. Your work involves distinguishing the real animals from something that should absolutely not be handed to a family.

This is a particularly effective premise for anyone whose response to a suspicious creature would normally be, “But look at its little face.”

Why it belongs on your wishlist: The identification element gives the shelter setting a clear gameplay twist. You have a reason to observe carefully rather than immediately deciding every arrival is your baby. Personally, I would require supervision.

Release status: An upcoming title; the developer has also offered a playtest. Check current access details before assuming you can download it immediately.

Which Should You Look at First?

Start with Private Psychic if dialogue and paranormal mysteries interest you. Try the Gretel & Hansel demo if you want a hands-on introduction to its darker fairy-tale world. Watch HINO for its art and adventure premise, and keep Adopt Me Please in mind if spotting impostors sounds enjoyable.

All four offer a different reason to be curious. None has persuaded me that entering a suspicious forest is a sensible decision. Fortunately, that’s what the character is for.
