There’s a particular confidence that comes from looking at an expensive dress and deciding you could make it yourself. You haven’t threaded a sewing machine since school. You currently own one needle, and nobody knows where it is. Nevertheless, the dress seems overpriced.
Dressmaker, a cozy sewing simulation from Cozy Lives and publisher Free Lives, gives that confidence somewhere to go. Released on September 21, 2026, the game lets you design and sew dresses for a town of customers with their own tastes and occasions to dress for.
You choose the fabric. You make the decisions. You also get to discover how many bad decisions can fit on one sleeve.
What do you actually do in Dressmaker?
The Dressmaker game takes you through making a garment, from planning your design to putting the finished pieces together.
You can work on ideas in a sketchbook, select fabrics, arrange and cut pattern pieces, preview them on a mannequin, and sew them using a sewing machine. Then come the decorative choices, including buttons, bows, appliqué, and lace.
This is where “just one more detail” becomes dangerous. You liked the dress three bows ago. Now you’re adding a fourth because removing the third would mean admitting something.
The appeal is having enough control to get particular. A fabric choice changes the look. A different panel gives you another possibility. You can keep experimenting until the dress resembles the idea you had—or a surprisingly good idea you arrived at by accident.
Your customers give the dresses a purpose
Customers want clothing for their individual tastes and important events. Completing their commissions earns reputation and coin.
Having someone to design for gives you a starting point beyond “make something pretty.” You have a person and a reason for the dress to exist, which can help when your own inspiration consists of opening every fabric option and liking all of them.
You can also display your own designs in the shop window and sell dresses off the rack. That gives you somewhere to put the outfit you were determined to make before the customer arrived and inconveniently expressed a preference.
Who is Dressmaker likely to appeal to?
If you enjoy styling characters, choosing color combinations, or getting absorbed in a creative project, the premise is worth a look. It’s available on Steam for Windows and supported Macs.
Watch some gameplay that includes cutting and sewing to see whether you enjoy the process. The finished dresses are lovely to look at, but you’ll spend your time making them.
There’s also a cat you can pet. That’s relevant purchasing information, and I appreciate the developers including it.
Give yourself permission to make something questionable
Dressmaker offers a very specific pleasure; turning an idea into a thing you can look at and say you made. Sometimes that thing will be beautiful. Sometimes you’ll learn why certain fabrics should have remained separate.
Either outcome gives you a reason to try another design.
And if you’ve spent years saying “I could make that” while browsing clothes, here’s your opportunity. The fabric is ready. Your opinions have been waiting for this.
