Fields of Mistria Beginner Guide: Cozy Tips for Your First Days

Fields of Mistria is a cozy farming/life sim that invites you to restore an overgrown homestead and befriend a charming town. New players often wonder what to do first in this pastel pixel world.

This beginner-friendly guide will walk you through the low-stress, momentum-building tasks for your first few in-game days. From planting crops to grabbing a daily soup, these tips will help you get started on the right foot. Let’s dive in!

Plant Your First Crops and Start Farming

On Day 1, you’ll receive basic farming tools (a Worn Hoe and Worn Watering Can) from helpful villagers Celine and Hayden. You also begin with a few starter seeds (e.g. 3 Tulip Seeds and 3 Turnip Seeds in Spring). Farming is a great way to build early momentum, so get those seeds in the ground right away:

  1. Clear a small plot: Use your starting Worn Sword to cut weeds and grass where you want to plant.

  2. Till the soil: Equip the hoe and till a few soil patches (one for each seed).

  3. Plant your seeds: Place your tulip and turnip seeds into the tilled soil.

  4. Water your crops: Use the watering can to water each planted seed. Do this every day so they grow.

Performing these basic farm chores will use some stamina, but don’t worry – running out just makes your character pause and yawn (you won’t faint). By planting the free seeds on Day 1, you’ll have crops to harvest and sell for profit in a few days.

Pro tip: whenever you harvest a new crop for the first time, ship (sell) at least one of it – this often unlocks a new cooking recipe in the mail. Starting with a small garden ensures you won’t be overwhelmed, keeping things cozy and low-stress.

Unlock Essential Tools Early (Focus on the Pickaxe)

Unlike some farming games, Fields of Mistria doesn’t hand you all the tools at once. You earn them through quests and purchases over the first week. On Day 2, a cutscene with Eiland will grant you the Axe (he thanks you for helping clear a fallen tree and lets you keep the axe). The Axe lets you chop logs and wood debris around your farm.

However, the most important tool to rush is the Pickaxe. Head to the town’s Quest Board on Day 2 and accept the request called “Do a Bro a Favor.” This quest leads you to Olric, talk to him and you’ll receive your Worn Pickaxe as a reward. Getting the pickaxe early unlocks the Mines, allowing you to gather ore for upgrades and craft better tools.

A couple days later (around Spring 4), check the Quest Board again for “Something’s Bugging Me” – completing it grants you a Bug Net for catching critters.

Other tools become available a bit later: the Fishing Rod and Shovel can be bought for 500 Tesserae, each at the beach tackle shop and general store, respectively. Don’t feel pressured to buy these immediately.

You can even save money by waiting to craft improved copper tools once you gather enough copper ore in the mines. For now, focus on unlocking the free tools via quests – especially that pickaxe – to keep your early-game progress rolling.

Grab the Free Daily Soup at the Inn

In Fields of Mistria, staying energized is key, and there’s a free way to restore stamina every day that many beginners miss. Each day, stroll into The Sleeping Dragon Inn and interact with the big soup cauldron over the fire.

You can slurp a free bowl of “Soup of the Day” to regain about 20 stamina. This daily soup is completely free and gives you a nice chunk of energy to extend your farming, foraging, or mining activities.

Make it a habit to pop into the inn daily for your free soup. Early on, your stamina bar is limited, so this little boost is invaluable for squeezing in a few extra tasks without spending money or items. It’s a cozy routine, too – imagine your character warming up with a hot bowl of soup before heading back out!

While you’re at the inn, you can also use the kitchen for cooking or chat with the innkeepers, but the priority for your first days is to never forget your daily soup. It keeps your adventures low-stress by avoiding early exhaustion.

Check the Quest Board Every Day

Another daily stop should be the town Quest Board (also called the Request Board), located in Mistria between the General Store and the Mill. Check the Quest Board each morning for new villager requests.

These requests are simple tasks like delivering an item or material, and they reset daily with a “!” mark when new quests are available. Accept all the quests you find (there’s no downside), because quests do not expire in Fields of Mistria. You can take your time to fulfill them without fear of failing.

The town request board lets you accept quests (e.g. “Request for Garlic” shown here). Quest requests don’t expire, so you can grab them daily and complete at your own pace for rewards.

Why prioritize the Quest Board early on? Quests provide valuable rewards: you’ll earn Tesserae (money), get food dishes or recipes, and even increase the town’s Renown rank by completing them. Renown will eventually unlock bonus rewards in the chest beside the board as the town’s prestige grows.

More immediately, some quests give unique tool rewards or perks. As mentioned, one Day 2 quest gives you the Pickaxe, and another early quest rewards a few free bathhouse passes for full stamina refills. It’s an excellent idea to tackle requests as they come, since they often align with things you’re doing anyway (farming, foraging, etc.).

Plus, it helps you meet the villagers who posted the requests. In short, make the Quest Board part of your daily routine: grab any new requests and chip away at them for steady progress and goodies.

Upgrade Your Backpack As Soon As You Can

Inventory space is very limited at the start – you have only 10 slots in your bag, which will fill up fast with tools, crops, and forage. One of the smartest early investments is to upgrade your backpack to expand your inventory.

Head to the General Store in town and purchase the Bag Upgrade for 1000 T (Tesserae) as soon as you can afford it. This upgrade adds another whole row of item slots (10 more), making your life so much easier. No more deciding which item to drop every time you go out gathering!

Earning 1000 T in the first few days might take some effort. Be sure to sell crops, complete quests, and forage valuables (like seashells on the beach, which sell for around 20 T each). It’s worth the cost. A bigger backpack reduces stress by letting you carry more and organize better.

Until you get the upgrade, remember you can stash items in the storage chest at your farmhouse to free up space. And if you do find yourself with a full inventory in the field, don’t panic (you can drop items on the ground temporarily).

Dropped items in Fields of Mistria do not despawn, even overnight or between seasons, so you can always come back for them later when you have room. This little trick can hold you over until your pouch is expanded.

Once you buy the first bag upgrade, you’ll have 20 slots to work with, which is plenty for the early game. (There will be a second upgrade available much later, after some town improvements, but you don’t need to worry about that until you’re further along.) With a roomier backpack, you’ll be able to farm, forage, and adventure freely without constant inventory Tetris, keeping the gameplay relaxing.

Final Tips for a Cozy Start

To recap, what should you do first in Fields of Mistria? Focus on the fundamentals: get your farm going with a few crops, unlock those vital tools (the pickaxe especially), enjoy the free daily soup for stamina, check the request board for easy quests, and save up for that backpack upgrade.

Along the way, take time to meet the townsfolk and explore a bit, but don’t feel rushed, there are no time limits on quests or story, so you can progress at your own comfortable pace.

Early game is all about building momentum without getting overwhelmed. Planting and questing will give you steady income and resources, while the soup and bag upgrade ensure you have the energy and space to keep going. By following these tips, you’ll establish a solid routine in your first few days that sets you up for success.

Before you know it, you’ll be mining, crafting, and expanding your farm with confidence. Enjoy your cozy adventure in Mistria, and happy farming!
