How to Fish Is Steam’s Viral $5 Obsession, and It Is Completely Unhinged
Most fishing games invite you to sit beside a peaceful lake, admire the scenery and patiently wait for something to nibble.
How to Fish gives you a gun.
Developed by Dazed Games, How to Fish is a physics-based fishing game for one to four players. It launched on Steam on August 20, 2026, sold more than one million copies within two days and recently reached over 370,000 concurrent players.
That is an alarming number of people who apparently looked at ordinary fishing and thought, “This needs more firearms.”
What Is How to Fish About?
The story begins after you and your friends drink while boating and crash onto a small island. To get home, you must catch fish, kill fish, sell fish and use the money to purchase better equipment.
Despite the educational title, How to Fish teaches almost nothing that should be attempted near an actual body of water.
You begin with basic equipment, but the game quickly introduces weapons, quests, new islands and increasingly dangerous creatures. Fish can be launched into the air, attacked with melee weapons or shot before being sold. There are also bosses, rare fish variants, seagulls, sharks, gambling and plenty of physics-based accidents.
It is less relaxing afternoon at the lake and more seafood-related criminal investigation.
Why Is How to Fish Suddenly Everywhere?
The price certainly helps. How to Fish normally costs $7.99, but its launch discount reduced the price to $4.95 through August 27. That is cheap enough for one friend to suggest it and three others to make an irresponsible purchase before asking any questions.
The game also delivers exactly the kind of chaos that works well on TikTok, YouTube and Twitch. Someone can launch a fish through the air, another player can attempt an unnecessary trick shot and a third can lose the group’s money gambling.
Every round creates short, ridiculous moments that are easy to share. It is the same formula that helped games like Lethal Company and R.E.P.O. become multiplayer obsessions: simple controls, affordable pricing and friends who cannot be trusted with basic responsibilities.
What Do You Actually Do in How to Fish?
The main gameplay loop is simple:
Catch sea creatures
Defeat them using rods, melee weapons or guns
Sell your catch for money
Purchase stronger equipment
Complete quests
Fight bosses
Unlock additional islands
Collect rare fish variants
Attempt to remember why you were trying to go home
According to the official Steam page, the game currently contains around four hours of content. That may sound short, but the unpredictable physics and multiplayer chaos provide replay value, especially if your friends are the kind of people who can turn walking toward a boat into a 20-minute disaster.
Can You Play How to Fish Alone?
Yes. How to Fish supports single-player gameplay, so you do not need three friends available to begin.
However, the game was clearly built around co-op chaos. Playing alone lets you focus on progression, quests and collecting. Playing with friends lets you discover which person in your group will immediately waste the money, attack a seagull and disappear without explaining where they went.
Both are valid experiences.
Is How to Fish a Cozy Game?
Emotionally? No.
Technically, it contains fishing, collecting, exploration and upgrading, which are all popular cozy-game mechanics. Unfortunately, the fish are fighting for their lives and somebody has brought a sniper rifle.
Players who enjoy peaceful fishing in Stardew Valley or Animal Crossing should not expect the same atmosphere. How to Fish is better suited to fans of chaotic co-op games, absurd physics and low-stakes multiplayer nonsense.
It is cozy only if your definition of relaxation includes fistfighting a shark with three friends.
Is How to Fish Worth Buying?
At its discounted price, How to Fish is easy to recommend for players who want a short, funny co-op game. It currently holds an Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam, and its enormous launch suggests plenty of people are finding the joke worth the price.
The main concern is its length. Players seeking a deep fishing simulator or a 100-hour progression system will probably want more content. Dazed Games has already confirmed that additional content and bug fixes are planned, but the current game is intentionally compact.
For approximately $5, though, you receive fishing, boss battles, gambling, guns and the opportunity to discover how quickly your closest friends will abandon teamwork after seeing a large crab.
That seems financially reasonable.
Why How to Fish Became Steam’s Latest Surprise Hit
How to Fish understands something important: fishing is peaceful, but launching a mackerel into the air and attempting to quick-scope it is extremely funny.
The game is inexpensive, immediately understandable and practically designed to produce viral clips. It does not need an enormous story or realistic fishing mechanics. It simply gives players a boat, several questionable weapons and enough freedom to create their own disasters.
One million copies in two days may sound unbelievable, but after seeing what the game allows players to do to an airborne fish, it starts making perfect sense.
